They Say I Say Exercise 1 pg 90 Naysayer
Some readers may challenge the view that the United States should end the drug war by saying that crime happens because of drugs, but drugs are illegal right now so of course it would be a result of higher crime. Some people argue that people should be punished for doing drugs, but many people need others to be sympathetic towards them in order for them to get help with drugs. If the United States made drugs legal for personal use, then it would cause less people in jail that are in there for drugs. The success to help people with a drug addiction will increase because the focus will be on helping those people and not throwing them in jail. If these people need to have the drug as a medication, then they can because it will not be illegal. The “drug-free society” that people want will not be able to exist, but the end of the war on drugs will cause people on drugs to have support from society and therefore not commit any more crimes.

However, some may disagree and say that these drug users deserve to be in jail. They may claim that the war on drugs has, in fact, been helpful to the economy by giving people jobs. Plus, how will we decide public policies guided by common sense if people have different views? Marijuana is not a legal issue, but health issue. It would be a great waste of time, money, and resources to study the policies used in other countries. They say people will learn from punishment, not compassion but I don't think they are viewing the larger picture. The war about drugs needs to end because it is hurting not only the country as a whole, but also individual people. We have a government for a reason and I believe we should use it. Use it to benefit citizens. If other countries can do it, maybe we can learn a few pointers from them.

-- Insert after the last paragraph
Proponents of a so called “drug free” society are right to argue that drugs should be kept away from children and that abuse is likely to occur. But they exaggerate when they claim that legalizing drugs would tear apart our society. Allowing drugs to be used and its effects to be treated, minimized, and handled openly by professionals would mean that adults could handle drugs more responsibly and with less fear of repercussions if they attempted to find treatment. Lifting bans would also lift the taboo and allow young people to be educated on the drugs and their risks and benefits. Additionally, the government could benefit from taxes on drugs and legal sales would hurt the current criminal monopoly.

As it makes sense to many people that the idea of a society uninvolved with drugs is not realistic, many others choose to believe otherwise. Many people feel that even over-the-counter drugs are harmful to their users. It is also likely that a large portion of Americans will not agree that there should be more compassion and less punishment involved with drug-related crimes. There are so many people who think the use of drugs is worthy of very serious responses, undeserving of any sort of compassion or understanding. Also, the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes could cause controversy for many. While there would obviously need to be some sort of proof that they have received permission to obtain the marijuana, there could be ways to get around it, and people could easily make up a fake medical reason to why they should be able to obtain that substance. Along with the government making profit of the marijuana sales, people could potentially have their lives saved, which is an obvious positive benefit, as long as people can overlook the negatives they may feel about its legalization.

“The United States must declare an end to the war on drugs, but drugs are illegal and legal in some ways. In some places drugs are illegal which condense the drug war, but in other states its legal which allows drugs to run free. It has created a multibillion- dollar black market, enriched organized crime groups and promoted the corruption of government officials throughout the world. Drugs can be a good thing and a bad thing depending on how you use them. In most cases drugs are used for bad things such as, getting high or entertainment. The good way is to help get people better in hospitals. Overall drugs aren’t a total failure in the united states just it is us that make it bad.”

    Objection
While it is understandable for people to be frustrated with the number of incarcerations due to drug related crimes, the fact of the matter is that certain drug usage is illegal and should be treated as such, including the consequences that come with breaking a law. The idea of setting up policies to help guide people to make smarter decisions when dealing with illegal drugs is comforting, however, it is unrealistic. There are those who argue that people react better when confronted with compassion rather than aggression or punishment, but unfortunately being “nice” in most cases doesn’t impact a person enough to question what they’re doing, especially if their actions are illegal. In the case of marijuana use for medical reasons, the process for this to be approved must be difficult in order to avoid abuse of the system. Even though marijuana has been proven to help reduce medical pains, in most cases, it is used for recreational purposes, an illegal activity. Therefore there needs to be a focus on actual need rather than simply lightening the load of medical marijuana paperwork. People are quick to jump on the bandwagon of peace and no conflict, especially when it comes to the amount of crimes and time served in jails and prisons due to illegal marijuana use, however, it is an illegal action and must be treated as such.

Some people think my argument is unrealistic, and that the declare of war on drugs should be more effective. The usage of illegal drugs is a federal offense, and should be taken very seriously. Most conservative, traditional citizens would agree with the fact that, if the law is broken there should be consequences; no matter how small or how big the crime is. Marijuana is becoming legal in some states, but the majority of the United States has not legalized this drug. Therefore, majority of the population disagrees with changing the rules. It is not fair to change the rules, when they are already set, because if someone has broken the law for drugs before why would it be okay a week later?

Many in our society view drugs as a bad thing that everyone deserves to be punished for if caught doing them or dealing them. Yet most of society doesn't view drinking bad but with funny commercials and a casual social interaction. While is it true that drinking isn't as horrible as doing drugs but it doesn't necessarily shield the point of drinking does hurt people like drugs. With drunk drivers killing innocent people, alcohol posinessing, and the abuse it brings to some people. Drinking has it cons just like drugs but just legalized and not view as harshly in our society also no illegal black market. But maybe on Sundays when some states don't sell it.

At this point I would like to raise some objections that have been inspired by the skeptic in me. The audience feels I have been ignoring the negatives of this situation. Of course, many will probably disagree on the grounds that keeping drugs out of the streets and limit them to serious hospital situations. Here many doctors would probably object that many drugs serve and help people through their daily life. But those doctors should certainly take issue with the argument that the drugs are leading to violence in the streets and many gangs are associated with the selling of drugs. In conclusion, the use of drugs in the street must be stopped by the limited use in hospitals. Once we limit the numbers on the street then we will be able to raise the amount of usage in hospital systems.

While some people agree that drugs, such as marijuana, should be allowed to be used freely without threatening criminal punishments, others would beg to differ. Drugs are a leading cause to deaths, crimes, and many purchases among the black market. Therefore, these drugs should not be legal and should not be used without punishable action. Eric thinks that is unfair for drugs not to be allowed for medical pharmaceuticals, however, this action is allowing people to get away with it usually not even for a medical reason. If some people are allowed access to marijuana then everyone is going to want access. People will begin to act sick or lie about why they use it. I am not trying to completely disagree with Eric but if people are allowed to use it as medicine it will start a riot and everyone will want it. Bottom line is drugs should be a criminal offense and not allowed unless under very specific, dyer needs. Drugs should be kept under control and constantly monitored, this will save society from many, many crimes.
